A photofacial is a skin treatment that uses light-based technology and are commonly used for treating brown spots, broken capillaries and for boosting collagen.
There are two types of technology used for photofacials. The first is light-emitting diode (LED) and the other is intense-pulsed light (IPL). Both of these systems are very different when it comes to treatment.
LED Photofacial
This treatment is a more gentle approach sing narrow spectrum light to boost collagen. The result is plumper, younger looking skin. This treatment is also used to kill off the bacteria that cause acne. You will likely find this kind of photofacial treatment in a day spa that has a large focus on esthetics.
LED photofacials are painless and are often considered cool and relaxing. They carry no risk of a burning sensation on the skin, unlike IPL or laser treatments. Patients will see the best results after multiple treatments. At Jon ‘Ric Medical Spa and Wellness Center, we recommend a series of six treatments with one to two weeks in between each. Once that cycle is complete, you should continue treatment every month or two, depending on your skin type.
This is a good treatment for those who want to either boost the collagen in their face, giving them a younger, fresh look, or those who want to treat acne. The results aren’t as dramatic as they would be with plastic surgery, but they are gentle, natural, and more affordable treatments in comparison.
IPL Photofacial
Some medical spas will offer IPL treatments, which are considered to be a type of laser treatment. An IPL photofacial can treat brown spots, broken capillaries, spider veins, facial redness and other skin conditions. In this treatment, a bright blast of light at a very high energy level is delivered through a hand held device. This treatment can often be painful and uncomfortable.
If you have brown spots, broken capillaries or other serious skin conditions, IPL is likely the best choice for you when looking into a photofacial. The number of treatments you will need depends on your skin condition and the results you are looking for, as well as how your skin reacts to each treatment.
Jon ‘Ric Medical Spa and Wellness Center recommends that you always combine these treatments with your regular skin care routine for the best results.
