Who doesn’t love Beyonce? From her long locks to her iconic look, she does no wrong on the beauty front. Beyonce has been a singer and entertainer for years and she continues to look like she doesn’t age! So what are her secrets? Elle Magazine got the scoop from Beyonce’s makeup artist, and we especially love the first tip!
Behind some of today’s most influential beauty icons (Joan Smalls, Karlie Kloss and Beyoncé) is makeup guru and L’Oréal Paris ambassador Sir John.
In a sea of contour and full-face beats, Sir John’s attention and focus on making skin look dewy and radiant has earned him the title of a true trendsetter and the king of glowing skin (he pretty much invented the fresh-faced, no-makeup look). And since fresh, glowing skin is what we’re all after, we caught up with the makeup guru during his hectic New York Fashion Week schedulenot only is he hosting his very own master class in NYC this week called the #sirjohngallery but he’s also touring the country with Beyoncéto ask him how we too can look flawless, with or without makeup.

1. Prioritize skin care
“I can’t stress this enough, but keeping your skin hydrated is extremely important. Not only does it help your skin just look and feel better, but your makeup will glide on. So moisturize, moisturize, moisturize,” says Sir John, who is also “obsessed with toning.” He recommends L’Oréal’s Pure Clay Mask, REN’s Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask, and Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir. “These three products will have your skin prepped and ready to go in no time.”
2. Less is more
When it comes to achieving that barely there look (because let’s face it: we can’t all wake up looking as #flawless as Beyoncé), Sir John has some really practical advice. “Start light and build the coverage you need. That way you cover those imperfections but the skin still shines through and you’ve created a totally natural look.” He recommends using “a great water-based moisturizer, such as L’Oréal Paris’ Bright Reveal Brightening Day Moisturizer SPF 30” and then following up with a tinted moisturizer with SPF that’s “light and breathable.” And then spot conceal where necessary.
3. Touch your face
When asked about how to apply said products, he stressed massaging products into the skin. “Don’t be afraid to really get in there,” he told me, since your skin will look more alive and awake after you massage it.
4. Glow, don’t shine
“My one piece of advice for applying product is to stay away from using anything that creates shine on the center of the facethe center of the face should always stay matte.” That way, when you take pictures straight on you won’t look oily or shiny. “However, I love to use luminizing products; L’Oréal’s Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer is great around the edge of the face to give it some brilliance and radiance so you look glowy and dewy but in a totally natural way.”
5. Wash your face
Sir John tells his girls (Beyoncé, Karlie, and Joan) to put skin care first. “Always take off makeup at night. It doesn’t matter if you’re dead tired or drunk, take your makeup off before bed.” He also recommends “using a cleaning device to get skin super-duper clean and a fruit enzyme peel once a week.”
6. Beautify from the inside out
Lastly, Sir John says that the major keys to glowing skin are juicing, an anti-inflammatory diet, and working up a sweat at least 20 minutes a day. “I’m really holistic when it comes to skin careit really starts on the inside,” he says. “I’m a huge fan of eating healthy to make sure your skin is getting the vitamins and nutrients it needs to look its best. I always tell my clients to drink a carrot juice before a big event because you will see the results literally overnight.”
